Session #19: Use of Width and Overlapping
pdf of Session #19: U9-U12 L2T Player Development Sessions #19

Combination Play Warm Up
Area: 15×15 or smaller
• Players moving around inside of an area with 2/3 of the players with balls in the hands.
• They cannot play the same ball twice in a row.
Variations:
• Underhand toss to another player.
• Overhand toss to another player.
• Single bounce to a partner.
• Toss up in the air, player catches while they are in the air.
• Player tossing and the player catching are both in the air when they throw and catch.
• Player throws to a player in front of them, calls for a 1-2 then follows the toss to build a PLATFORM. Player with the ball throws it back to the player.
• Cross over….as they run past each other they exchange in their hands.
• Overlap…tell player receiving the ball to “HOLD” then run around and on “NOW” get it back on overlap.
Advanced:
• Same as previous exercise however now the ball is at the foot.

Overlapping Continued – 3v3 w Wide Channel
Area: 15×15 or smaller
• Wide goals, 10 metres.
• A neutral player is on the outside, or if you have three teams of 3 have a 3v3 + a neutral on the inside and then two other neutrals on the outside channels.
• The players on the inside must overlap before they come back in and score.
• Defenders cannot defend wide area to start. You can have them defend later if you like.
• Switch neutral players every five minutes.

Tech/Tact Exercise (Cross Overs)
Area: 15×15 or smaller
• Same exercise as previous however players in channels are on the same team….at first there can be no opposition in wide area but then allow the opposing wide player to defend.
• Central players cannot go wide to defend.
• Wide player can receive and dribble inside while player overlaps OR they can complete the overlap OR they can reverse it.

4V4 plus 2 Neutral (Overlapping)
Area: 15×15 or smaller
• Attack one end zone…when you score, quickly change direction and attack the other end line. How many goals can be scored in three minutes?
• Players must dribble into the end zone.
• Attempt an overlap before you score.
Overlaps …. Attacking AROUND
Where is the least protected space? How can you attack the least protected space? How can you overlap and attack the least protected space?
A point if you complete an overlap …. can complete as many overlaps without scoring as we want to encourage the movement and creation of space.

Final Game Area: 15×15 or smaller
• Encourage the overlap.
Can you as a coach, show how an overlap is a 2v1 and can you show that attackers on the ball how they can dribble inside to open up space for the overlapping player. By continuing to face the goal or middle of the field as they dribble forward, the defenders are having to make a choice of defending wide runner or the goal….players can be shown the options based on defender decision.
