Theme: Introduction to space
Session #17: ‘Click’ And Runs Behind First Defenders
pdf of Session #17: U13-U18 Train To Train / Train To Compete

3v1 WITH PLAYERS ON OUTSIDE
Set up and sequence
– Four teams of 5-6
– Small area of 6v6 or 8v8 depending on the abilities of players
– TWO touch or ONE touch
– 3 players stay in the home field and play 3v1…. the other three players go to the middle and play in another field as defenders. One defender at a time enters the area after playing a pass from the middle diagonally across the area.
– As soon as the ball is w on or is played out of the area the next ball gets played in.
– Defenders count the number of balls they played in within the ‘one minute’ game.
– Both groups (i.e. all green players) get to defend in the area then they rotate to defend in the next area.
– Comfortable under pressure, Use of third dimension, Move feet around the ball versus extra touches, Teammates may have to come short to bring defender to one side so it opens up the other player

BALL STRIKING
1. ‘Heel to the Centre of the Ball’ – Plant in front of the ball
2. ‘Shoulders Back – Hips Forward’ – Stay tall
3. ‘Cross Over and End Where You Started’ – Lean to the side and lean back

4v3 (3V3+1) with TRANSITION
If there are enough players, and if the players are ‘ready’ for the two-field game … engagement levels must be high, set up two fields side by side.
Play 3v3 plus one neutral attacking player. Score by dribbling across the end line. If team scores they stay on and attack the opposing end line. If team concedes a goal, they leave the field and a new team of three enter from the middle.
Look for spaces behind 1st defender and move into that space:
1. Overlaps
2. Underlaps
3. Live in the Triangle
4. Cross-overs

GAG 6v4+2 RUNS BEHIND 1st DEFENDER (15 mins)
8 (4v3+1) or 10 (5v3+2) or 12 (6v4+2) Players Per Field (MANIPULATE NUMBERS TO FIT THE GROUP)
Players dribble across the line to score. If they score, then they get another ball from their end and begin the next attack.
1. Dribble across the line to score.
2. Must overlap or have a ‘run behind the 1st defender’ before there is a goal. This is introduction to many so we do not need to spend a great deal of time on Overlaps / Runs Behind the First Defender here…. SHOW them the picture of what an overlap looks like and have them attempt to solve the problem…. only meant to be a 8-10 minute exercise. Communication of the Overlap is HOLD and then NOW after the overlapping player gets past the PLATFORM. We always need a platform in order to overlap.
3. Can they find the DOUBLE PASS in order to go forward or across the field?
SPEAK TO PLAYERS ABOUT 360 SUPPORT. AS PLAYERS LEAVES SPACES TO OVERLAP, OTHER PLAYERS MUST FILL THE ‘THREE KEY SPACES’ and MAKE RUNS BEHIND THE FIRST DEFENDER.
Video shows 4v3+1 (8 player exercise)

FINAL GAME 6v6
Area: 20×20 or smaller 6V6
– Open game but encourage keeping possession as an individual…. shielding, turning and facing
– Begin to encourage movement behind 1st Defender.
