Pirates For Shielding - Protecting The Ball (Two Player Activity)

Objectives: To help players learn to protect the ball when it is in their personal space as well as to make good use of general space.
Area Size: 8×8.

Pirates For Shielding – Protecting The Ball (Two Player Activity)

– One player has a ball and dribbles around the area. The other player in the area performs 3 jumping-jacks (or other desired exercise) then attempts to get the ball from the dribbler.

1. If the dribbler is able to get their body between the ‘defender’ (player attempting to get the ball) and the ball then the defender must do 3 jumping-jacks while the dribbler escapes.

2. Now we become more detailed in how this ‘Body Before Ball’ or shielding is applied. As the defender attempts to get the ball the dribbler must be 1/2 turned (or side-on) where they can see the defender and the ball at the same time. Once they are in this position the defender must do 3 jumping-jacks as the dribbler escapes.

3. The next details: As the dribbler get s 1/2-turned they must also have their feet split and closest arm up so they become wider (and defender is farther from the ball). Once the defender sees this position they then do their exercise while the dribbler escapes to another area of the field.

* After 60-90 seconds, depending on age, have the players switch positions.
